The 2016 Volkswagen Up! is clearly intended to be a city car, but it’s a heck of a lot more than that. It’s a fantastic purchase that will provide you with cheap running costs and a fantastic driving experience. Let’s take a more in-depth look at Volkswagen’s offering.vw badge close up

It all starts with the price, and the Up! is very generously priced for those who are looking to purchase their first car. The lowest models on the market don’t even break the £10,000 mark, meaning they are affordable for all. Still, you can obviously seek Volkswagen finance options if you’re looking to pay on a monthly basis.

So, why is it so cheap? Well, you can only get it with a 1.0-litre engine at present. Don’t be put off by that information, though. The three-cylinder engine can be upgraded with a greater amount of power in the higher-priced models. There’s also a choice between an automatic or a manual gearbox depending on your preferences. In fact, you can even get an all-electric version, too! It’s obviously a small vehicle, but don’t let this fool you into thinking it’s a waste of time. The most important thing about it is that it feels great to drive, and it has a comfortable interior that looks classy for the price you pay.

Another thing that will surprise you about the Up! is how spacious it can be. Although you might not think it, it packs a lot of room for anything you need to store in the boot. For those of you who are concerned about your height, the Up! is intelligently designed to accommodate taller people. It’s still small, of course, but it shouldn’t pose a massive problem.

The great thing about compactness and a small engine is how easy the car is to run. Firstly, you’ve got the ability to sneak into parking spaces with pleasant ease. In terms of running costs, this is where the small engine comes in very handy. CO2 emissions are low, and it easily gets over 60 mpg, differing with each model. If you want to reduce those running costs even more, there’s a special BlueMotion version. This version is tailored towards improving economic features.

What about the interior and exterior? Well, the interior is packed with basic infotainment features. You’ve got a DAB radio with CD and aux support for additional music devices if you desire. You can also add a touchscreen system for an additional price, working with your smartphone to provide multiple features. All in all, it’s basic but well-implemented. In terms of the exterior, the build quality is superb. If you go for the higher-priced models, you’ll benefit from improved build work, but even the lowest offering is impressive.

What’s the verdict then? It’s very difficult to find negatives with the 2016 Volkswagen Up!. It’s basic, sure, but it makes sure that all those basic features are implemented to their fullest. The result is a fantastic car that is perfect for first-time buyers. If you’re living in the city, you owe it to yourself to get one of these.
