DIY Tip: Changing the Oil in your Vdub – Part 3

To learn how to change the oil in your VW please see the first 2 posts in the series, but here are some extra tips for common problems you might encounter:

Oil is Thick

If you find that the oil is as thick as molasses, this means that it is cold. The best way to drain it on a cold day is to heat the engine slightly. Just a few minute should make the oil warm, but not too hot.

The Oil Sump Stud Comes Off

This is quite common. Sometimes when you remove the nuts from the sump plate, one of the studs falls off. All you need to do is wait until you refit the plate and screw it back into the hole before tightening the nuts.

Oil Sump Stud Breaks when Tightening the Nuts

Don’t worry! You can easily get a new stud, but you might have to remove the sump plate, strainer and seals again to get at the stud with a vice grip. Unscrew it from the case and simply replace it with a new one.
