These days carmakers like Volkswagen are focusing their efforts on building eco-friendly vehicles. The gas guzzlers of yesteryear seldom have a place in today’s modern world. Especially in places where climate control is often a much talked-about subject.
Many car manufacturers are building hybrid models. They contain small engines, but they are also linked to an electric motor and battery powertrain. The idea is that the electric motor works in urban environments where short journeys occur. And the result? Less CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
Now, you might be thinking that hybrids are boring and mundane vehicles. But, where does it say that in the rulebook? Nowhere, of course! Take the new Volkswagen Passat GTE. It’s a plug-in hybrid available in both saloon and estate variants.
OK, the Passat isn’t known for being the sportiest of vehicles on the road. But the Passat GTE is a little special. In fact, it’s safe to say that it’s like a wolf in sheep’s clothing! Intrigued? Let me share with you some facts about this new model:
It doesn’t hang around
Some folks have a stereotypical view of hybrids. They think they are low-power, eco-friendly vehicles that cost a lot to buy. They also think all hybrids look like the Toyota Prius. But, nothing could be further from the truth with the new Volkswagen Passat GTE!
Under the bonnet, the car has a 154 brake horsepower engine. It’s a 1.4-litre TSI unit that works in tandem with the 85 kW electric motor. According to James from Listers VW, it will also be available with other engine configurations. The range-topper will have 276 brake horsepower on tap!
It offers plenty of technology
As you might expect from a VW, the new Passat GTE comes with a vast array of technology as standard. For instance, take the hybrid drive system. Drivers can press the “E” button (for all-electric drive) to cover around 31 miles of ground from a full battery.
If you aren’t near a convenient charging point, you don’t have to worry about range anxiety. It has a “Charge” mode that uses the petrol engine to recharge the battery as you drive. There are plenty of options you can adjust in the hybrid drive system. Volkswagen says that it’s possible to get around 620 miles from a full tank of petrol and a charged battery!
Of course, the technology doesn’t just stop at the hybrid drive system. As standard, you can enjoy features like a Driver Alert System and City Emergency Braking.
As far as entertainment goes, you’ve got a 6.5-inch infotainment system. It offers features like satellite navigation, DAB digital radio and more. Naturally the system also comes with Bluetooth connectivity as standard. That means you can use your smartphone hands-free. And you can also stream your favourite songs from Spotify or whatever music app you use.
According to Volkswagen, the new Passat GTE will go on sale from June 2015. The first orders will get supplied to customers from October onwards.
