Golf GTI Clubsport S Gets Highest Possible Rating
The VW Golf GTI Clubsport S became a very special hatchback from the day it was revealed as it celebrates the 40th anniversary of the most famous and iconic hot hatch.
The Clubsport S then proved to be a worthy remembrance of the Mk1 GTI when it put down a lap record at the Nurburgring which put it up as the fastest front-wheel-drive production car to lap the famous German ‘Ring.
While we can’t argue that the GTI Clubsport S is very fast, how rewarding it is to drive is still unknown. Or rather it was. Because car magazine Autocar recently tested the Clubsport S and they gave it a 5-star rating!
According to the UK car magazine, the Clubsport S is a big improvement over even the already sporty Clubsport. They say that it’s not only more responsive, but the lower weight coupled with added power and stickier tyres give it more performance and driveability.
The GTI Clubsport S is also means that you don’t have to sacrifice a smooth ride and confidence to attack the circuit as it is equipped with a superb suspension which allows it to absorb bumps with grace.
Unfortunately Autocar’s Matt Prior, who was testing the car, didn’t get to take the Clubsport S out on the road but it seems that the performance, drive and ride on track is enough to lead you to take VW’s word on its offtrack harshness as the automaker says doesn’t even exist.
Prior loved the Clubsport S, but he worries that its biggest problem might be the less expensive Golf R. With that said, with the extra cash you do get a little more for your money so it may well be worth it.
