Volkswagen AG Plans to Buy Shares in Italdesign Giugiaro
Sticking to its goal to become the biggest automaker by 2018, Volkswagen AG, it seems, will be purchasing controlling stakes in the largest design and engineering firm in Italy, Italdesign Giugiaro. The deal comes at a perfect time for Volkswagen, who currently own 10 brands including the recently acquired Porsche, and they want to ensure that each brand retains its uniqueness and engineering precision.
There are currently 60 cars lined up for redesign or launch in 2010 and the support of a well known design and engineering firm will only increase VW’s popularity and success. The other part stakeholder, Italdesign Giugiaro employs 975 people and has over 800 computerized workstations for superior design and engineering. They have been operating since 1968 and have made some of the most innovative design and engineering adjustments to Alfa Romeo’s, Maserati’s, and BMW’s. This collaboration will ensure that only the best cars enter the market from the Volkswagen house in years to come.
