VW receives 19M views on YouTube with its distracted driving ad

In its new ad Volkswagen AG is trying to send a warning message to drivers in China about the dangers of texting and driving. However, a video spot of the ad used for the same purpose has attracted broader audience on YouTube.

Recently, Volkswagen released the ad called, “Eye on the Road.” The ad featured the airing of a public service announcement in a Hong Kong movie theater in March. This clip has received as many as 19 million views on YouTube.

The video shows moviegoers coming inside a theatre and occupying seats. As the light faints and projector starts, you can see a moving car marching forward. The camera angle is from the drivers prospective. Right then a location-based broadcaster sends a text message to everyone sitting in the theater. As soon as the audience checks their phones the car on screen bangs into a tree.

The screen shows a message which reads, “Mobile use is now the leading cause of death behind the wheel. A reminder to keep your eyes on the road.”

VW spokesman Carsten Krebs stated that the issue of distracted driving present within China as discussed by VW representatives prompted VW to produce the video.

As per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, engaging in tasks like texting increases the risk of vehicle accident to three times more.

OgilvyOne Beijing produced the ad for Volkswagen. Krebs was of the view that the company is planning to produce more such public service announcements.
