VW Scirocco poised for US market return

Volkswagen may bring back its Scirocco model in the US market, reports Bloomberg. The Scirocco was sold in the US back in the 1970s and 1980s, but VW decided against a US launch for the newer version that came out in 2007. At the time, the OEM was concerned that the Scirocco would damage sales of the GTI (the Golf GTI is badged as the Volkswagen GTI in the US).

However, VW’s US head Jonathan Browning has now said that the OEM is “looking for opportunities” to introduce the model to the US market, adding that he anticipates this step being taken “as soon as possible.”

Volkswagen wants to boost US sales to 1 million vehicles a year by 2018. It plans to launch operations at its new plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee by April this year.

Browning also noted that the OEM is considering a US return for its Phaeton model, which was withdrawn from the market in 2006
